12-Step Opioids Addiction Treatment

The misuse of opioids such fentanyl, heroin, and morphine, as well as prescription painkillers such as Percocet, Demerol, and OxyContin is a world-wide epidemic. Whether individuals begin taking these drugs due to a legitimate health need or as for recreational purposes, the abuse of opioids can have the same devastating effects. These drugs can cause both immediate, negative effects and long-term damage. Opioids are extremely addictive drugs, and once an individual becomes dependent on these substances, he or she will be virtually incapable of getting through the day without the drugs in his or her system. This condition, clinically known as opioid use disorder, is a complex, but treatable condition.

At Serenity Knolls, we offer dedicated care that is provided by experienced, clinical professionals. We have over 25 years of experience treating individuals with various substance addictions and related emotional health conditions. Opioid addiction can take a strong toll on families and individuals, but treatment can offer a more productive and happier future.

Helping a Loved One or Family Member Get Treatment

If someone close to you has been using or has become dependent on heroin, morphine, prescription painkillers, or other opioids, you may feel anxious, confused, or even angry.  It is easy to begin to feel hopeless, but there are a few things you can do to help your loved one. Consider the following:

  • Learn as much as possible about the symptoms and signs of opioid use and the disease of addiction. Opioids impact the brain and the body in specific ways. By understanding more about what your loved one is experiencing, you will be in a better position to help.
  • Identify a few treatment programs that will fit the needs of the person you care about. Consider calling these treatment programs to ask any questions you might have, or to understand more about their treatment methods, so that you may share your information with your loved one.
  • Talk with the person you are concerned about. Share your concerns and observations without judgment or accusations. Talk about your research, and be prepared to encounter some resistance or defensiveness. Listen carefully to your loved one’s concerns and point of view as his or her feedback may give you much needed insight into what he or she has been experiencing.
  • If your loved one is willing to accept treatment, consider assisting in making appointments, offering transportation to and from treatment, or helping with household duties such as pet-sitting or child care while she or he completes treatment.
  • Take good care of yourself. Recovery is a process, not a one-time event. Your loved one will experience ups and downs, and he or she may experience a relapse at some point. Be prepared by attending family counseling sessions or becoming a part of the family program at your loved one’s treatment program.

Remember that setbacks are a part of recovery. Relapses do happen, but they can be overcome. You can remain a source of love, encouragement, and support by taking good care of yourself and remaining steady for your loved one.

During one’s initial assessment, and for the duration of treatment at Serenity Knolls, substance use concerns and co-occurring mental health needs are assessed, which then prompt the inclusion or exclusion of the below listed interventions within a resident’s personalized treatment plan:

Individual counseling: So as to gauge how residents are progressing in their treatment, the care supplied by Serenity Knolls includes daily individual counseling sessions with knowledgeable and experienced alcohol and drug counselors. During these meetings, men and women can discuss how they are doing on a day-to-day basis and can report any successes and/or setbacks that occur while they are working to overcome an addiction to opioids.

Individual therapy: We, at Serenity Knolls, are pleased to offer weekly individual therapy sessions for those who come to our center to break free from an addiction to an opioid. Our staff psychologists and marriage and family therapists are the professionals who meet with residents during these sessions so that men and women can receive the one-on-one attention they need to make strides in their recovery. Individual therapy can serve as a time in which residents can talk about things that they may not feel comfortable sharing in group, establish goals for the future, and work through any emotions and feelings that they may be experiencing.

Group therapy: In order to provide residents with the support and guidance they need as they work on their recovery from addictions to opioids and/or other substances, the programming at Serenity Knolls features several group therapy opportunities each week. Group therapy sessions are led by psychologists, marriage and family therapists, experienced alcohol and drug counselors, and other healthcare professionals, and include several residents so that they are able to provide and receive support to and from one another. The following types of groups can serve as excellent opportunities for men and women to practice the invaluable skills that they are learning:
